The Rising New York Road Runners paired up with a Red Hook elementary school Tuesday to celebrate 20 years of providing free fitness programs to children.
Students at P.S. 676 received free New Balance sneakers, and were able to meet former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber and Olympic bronze medalist Jenny Simpson through the organization.
Simpson says that even though the children received sneakers as a gift, the generosity should also be a reminder that the greatest gift might be with the teammates you share the sneakers with.
Students say they plan to stay fit by playing sports, such as soccer and track.
The Rising New York Road Runners is part of the larger organization in charge of the New York City Marathon.
