The Rite Aid pharmacy on Pitkin Avenue in Brownsville is among hundreds of locations set to close as the struggling chain moves forward with its latest bankruptcy filing.
A spokesperson close to the company confirmed that Rite Aid is once again entering Chapter 11 bankruptcy. As part of that process, the company will sell off prescriptions, store inventory, and other assets. Any stores or distribution centers not sold will be permanently shut down.
Rite Aid has not confirmed the exact closing date for the Brownsville location, but sources say all stores nationwide are expected to close or change ownership in the coming months.
While stores remain open for now, Rite Aid will stop issuing customer rewards points and will no longer honor gift cards or process returns starting next month. The company also confirmed it is not ordering new inventory, meaning some shelves may begin to look sparse.
Customers will still be able to access prescriptions and immunizations in the short term, and Rite Aid says it is working on transferring prescription files to other pharmacies.
This comes after recent closures in Brooklyn, including a Rite Aid on Bay Parkway and another in Bensonhurst just days ago.
Rite Aid operates over 1,200 stores nationwide, with a large footprint in New York, Pennsylvania, and California. The company cited ongoing financial challenges, increased retail theft, and losses tied to opioid litigation as factors driving the closures.
