The first day of school is exciting and for Brownsville students crossing the street to get there was much safer.
Improvements have been made in front of the Brooklyn Ascend Charter School in Rockaway Parkway.
Students were happy to see the new changes Wednesday morning.
The Department of Transportation unveiled a new crosswalk, traffic signals and a pedestrian island.
School officials say they are excited about the new improvements and are starting to see changes in some areas.
They say there's still work to be done regarding the double parking situation in the area. However, they say their two main problems, U-turns and jaywalking, have been alleviated.
The DOT says over a dozen pedestrians were involved in traffic crashes and injured on the block from 2009 to 2013. One of the accidents was severe.
Students and faculty are hoping that the pattern will come to an end.
