A woman's mission to bring attention to the trash problems on Rockaway Parkway in Canarsie has gotten results for now.

Valerie Woodford first voiced her complaints on News 12's Ask the Borough President. She explained how the mounting trash and clutter was horrible and blamed store workers.

Woodford said a surprise visit to the area was what was needed. So News 12 tagged along with city officials and concerned neighbors and found a clean Rockaway Parkway.

Woodford said store workers got wind of the visit and made sure to tidy up.

"This is the first time I've ever seen it this clean," said Woodford.

An example of what neighbors are upset about is dog food scattered all down the street.

"We want to stay on top of it," said Borough President Eric Adams.

City officials say they will be heading back to Rockaway Parkway to make sure it stays clean. They say anyone in violation faces up to $350 per violation.

Store owner Evelyn Pena says the stores are not the only ones to blame. She tells News 12 that she sees people constantly littering.
