Rockland-based Habitat for Humanity and the Marine Corps League donated and spent two days putting together a temporary ramp for a World War II veteran who lives in West Nyack.

"I just want to say thank you to all the people that helped me and everybody who came,” said Richard Porr.

The ramp will help Porr get in and out of his home because walking has become more difficult.

Porr, now 95 years old, joined the service at 17, and was in the Navy during World War II. For two years he was an engineer on the USS McCaffery, a destroyer in the Pacific.

"We do a 'Brush with Kindness' which helps people stay aging in place. So this ramp will help him stay in his home with his daughter,” said Jenna Mega, the executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Rockland County. "We love the fact that we are able to serve the people who served us."

Porr is also a colon cancer survivor.
