With Memorial Day weekend arriving, many families will be heading to the beach or pool, and safety experts are reminding people to keep their safety in mind.

Safety instructors say that parents or a guardian should never leave a child unattended in the water, even if they’re in the shallow end because of how fast drowning can happen.

“Drowning looks nothing like it is in the movies,” said one instructor. “Drowning is silent, anyone can slip under the water in less than 20 seconds.

Instructors say swimmers should avoid breathing competitions and diving headfirst into water less than eight feet deep.

Most importantly, they say if you see someone struggling, alert a lifeguard immediately.
