Saint Raphael pioneered an Orthodox Christian Community in Brooklyn more than a century ago.
Church officials say Saint Raphael is known for traveling around the United States, Canada and into Mexico during the early 1900s to gather people who immigrated from at that time greater Syria.
He would arrive in a town for only a few days to baptize babies that needed to be baptized, marry people that maybe had a civil marriage but wanted to get married in the church.
These missionary journeys helped bring orthodox people from the Middle East together that had no church in their new communities.
Officials say 30 parishes were established before his death which have now grown to 200.
