A would-be scammer demanded $3,000 for the safe return of a Brooklyn woman's 14-year-old daughter -- only he didn't realize the mother knew exactly where her daughter actually was.
The Crown Heights mother, who asked to remain anonymous, says the caller claimed to have kidnapped her daughter Tuesday afternoon.
She recorded the call and went straight to the 77th Precinct.
Police say the scam is common.
They advise anyone who receives a similar threatening call to ask for the caller's name, avoid supplying additional personal information, ask for a callback number, and never send money.
