Sen. Charles Schumer demanded Monday that the Department of Justice improve its efforts to extradite an accused killer who was arrested overseas.
Schumer met with the family of Brighton Beach shopkeeper Vladimir Tolstykh, who was murdered in 2009 in a garage near his store.
Abakar Gadiyev, one of the suspects in the brutal beating death, is in Australian custody. Gadiyev and another suspect allegedly fled the country shortly after the murder.
Australian authorities arrested Gadiyev two years ago, and the country has an extradition treaty with the United States, but Gadiyev still has not been turned over.
Schumer blamed the Australian government for the delay and called on the Justice Department and the State Department to step up pressure to expedite the process.
Monday marked seven years since the slaying.
