A decision in the case of Roe v. Wade could come from the
Supreme Court as soon as today. In the meantime, Gov. Kathy Hochul is expected to sign legislation to protect abortion rights for New Yorkers Monday.
Gov. Hochul's expected signing comes on the heels of a decision being made by the Supreme Court that could possibly overturn Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion nearly 50 years ago.
The Supreme Court updated its calendar, indicating that a decision could be handed down today or Wednesday of this week.
A leaked draft opinion from back in May indicates that five justices were ready to overturn this monumental case and give states the right to determine whether to restrict abortion rights.
Since that draft opinion leaked, activists on both sides have been speaking out with protests erupting in New York as well as across the country.
Just last month, Gov. Hochul announced $35 million in funding to support abortion providers in New York. Her legislative package being signed today is just another step being made to protect abortion rights ahead of the Supreme Court’s decision.
