Sen. Alessandra Biaggi will challenge Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman and five-term Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney in New York's 17th District.
The progressive Democrat, who represents parts of lower Westchester and the Bronx, says she's running to reverse climate change, safeguard abortion rights and grant access to Medicare for All.
Biaggi originally announced plans to run in New York's 3rd Congressional District, which would've included parts of Westchester, the Bronx, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties. She switched once the maps were redrawn.
She called Maloney "selfish" for switching from his current 18th District to 17, which is seen as less competitive but forced incumbent Democratic Rep. Mondaire Jones to scramble from 17 to a new district.
"It is really important that we send people to Washington who are unafraid of standing up to special interests, who really will prioritize the people regardless of their political power and take stands for things that we know people are angry about," says Biaggi.
A spokesperson for Maloney's campaign responded in a statement that reads in part, "Congressman Maloney has always been there for the Hudson Valley and will continue to be. He looks forward to earning the support of voters once again this fall."
