Sen. Chuck Schumer unveiled a request to the federal Department of Transportation to do an audit on roads including Routes 25 and 27.

The Senate majority leader was in New Hyde Park on Wednesday to make the announcement.

"Today, I'm calling on the federal government to work with the state and local government on conducting a formal safety audit," Schumer said.

He says it would analyze the roads and intersections, including the design of the roads and traffic flow.

Schumer says the audit would help channel the $5 billion set aside in the recently passed infrastructure bill toward a variety of road improvements.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Routes 25 and 27 are among the deadliest roads on Long Island with a total of 123 traffic fatalities from 2016 to 2020.

Those who have lost loved ones to traffic accidents on busy Long Island streets are hoping something will get done.

Diana Alati, of Bethpage, says her life was destroyed when her 13-year-old son Andrew Alati was fatally struck while crossing Hempstead Turnpike in 2019.

"The driver never saw him, he wasn't paying attention, and he was speeding," Diana Alati says.

Schumer says the audit will help identify possible safety improvements such as installing rumble strips and imposing stricter speed limits to prevent accidents from occurring.
