The newly unveiled bipartisan gun safety legislation has been agreed upon by the U.S. Senate and aims to address our nation’s gun violence crisis.

The legislation does include the support of 10 Republican senators, and one of the biggest factors being worked on is how the legislation will be written.

The legislation is centered around helping states create red flag laws aimed to keep guns out of the hands of those who pose a threat to both themselves and others. Major investments in mental health and suicide prevention programs are also a key focus of this bill.

Assemblymember Kenny Burgos spoke with News 12 about how New York has pioneered the conversation on gun violence.

“We have been screaming that the federal government needs to step in, so they are announcing today,” said Burgos. “This is the most comprehensive gun package that we’ve seen in the United States in 30 years.”

Democratic lawmakers are pushing to draft the bill and keep Republicans on board before Congressional recess, which is in two weeks.
