As the Olympics get underway, seniors from the Bronx's Kings Harbor Multicare Center held a celebration to mark the opening ceremonies with their very own games.
More than a dozen seniors and staff gathered earlier today to walk outside, going from building to building at Kings Harbor Multicare Center. Friday's ceremony was just day one of their two-week celebration.
Those participating today walked around East Gun Hill Road, passing the torch from one resident to the next. The ceremony also included a drum line, flag presentation and torch lighting. One resident who is 104 years old passed the torch off to another senior aged 105 years old.
The center's medical director Roy Goldberg says it was nice to see everyone together, including staff and residents after all they've been through with the pandemic.
"We have begun going above and overboard to make sure that everybody has fun. As much as everybody loves to exercise, some of our residents are not healthy enough to exercise but this gives them a sense of what it's like. And it's great for us also. It's great not only for the morale of the residents but the morale of the staff," Goldberg says.
Now the seniors will spend the next two weeks participating in activities and competitions with their fellow residents at the Kings Harbor Multicare Center.
