A gaping sinkhole at 64th Street and Fifth Avenue in Sunset Park is causing a ton of headaches for both business owners and residents.
The hole is estimated to be about 25 feet deep and 30 feet wide. The sinkhole opened up earlier this week, causing disruptions to water service and forcing roads to be shut down. According to the Department of Environmental Protection, the sinkhole was caused by a water main break. Water had to be shut off in the area for a time because of the severity of the damage.
The husband of a woman who owns an accounting company in the area says his wife had to relocate temporarily until the sinkhole is fixed. Other owners say they will try to stick it out even though it's hard for customers to get into the area. They say they hope repairs are done quickly.
DEP officials say the road closures will likely last several more days.
