Police have released a sketch of the suspect wanted for stabbing two children Sunday night in East New York, killing one.
The suspect is described as a heavyset black male between 25 and 30 years old, who stands about 6 feet tall.
According to investigators, 6-year-old Prince Joshua Avitto and 7-year-old Mikayla Capers encountered the man in the elevator of their Schenck Avenue apartment building as they were going to get ice cream. The suspect, armed with a knife, attacked both kids, killing Avitto and leaving Capers in critical condition.
A vigil was held Monday night where the community released balloons in memory of Avitto and prayed for Capers' recovery.
Lawmakers also held a press conference Monday demanding additional funding for surveillance cameras at NYCHA buildings, including the one where the attack happened.
The stabbings were just blocks away from where 18-year-old Tanaya Copeland was fatally stabbed Friday. Police confirm they've identified several common factors between the cases, including the type of weapon used.
A reward for information leading to an arrest has been raised to $12,000. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
