Mom-and-pop shops in Brooklyn received some well-deserved attention as part of Small Business Saturday.
Residents say local, independently owned stores are where they often get the best bang for their buck. Many also think small businesses offer more quality goods than big box stores.
Customers were buzzing in and out of the Book Mark Shoppe on Third Street in Bay Ridge, taking advantage of discounts from 10 to 50 percent off all purchases. Owner Christine Freglette says they use the day to not only promote themselves, but also all other stores on the street.
The Book Mark Shoppe has been open for 12 years and hopes to continue for many more.
Shoppers say small businesses are the fabric of the community and they will support them as long as they can.
Small Business Saturday has been giving love to local stores since it was created by American Express in 2010.
