A 19-year-old man from Suffolk County was killed in a head-on crash in Ulster County, New York, early Sunday morning.

Troopers from the State Police Kingston barracks responded to a two-car motor vehicle collision on Route 28 around 6:45 a.m.

Following an investigation, police say Peter Bonenfant, 19, of Smithtown, was driving a 2024 Chevrolet westbound on State Route 28 when he crossed into the eastbound lane and hit a 2021 Mercedes-Benz.

Bonenfant was extricated from the vehicle and taken to Health Alliance Hospital in Kingston, where he was pronounced dead.

The operator of the Mercedes, Philip Jacobus, 72, of New York, NY, was also transported to Health Alliance Hospital, but later transferred to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital where he ultimately died.

The Smithtown High School West boys’ lacrosse team remembered Bonenfant in an Instagram post, saying “Rest easy brother…”

An online fundraiser was created to help support the 19-year-old's family during this difficult time.
