The rush is on to register some Brooklyn neighborhoods and buildings as landmarks, but historians warn that doesn?t guarantee preservation.

Northern Crown Heights and Fiske Terrace-Midwood Park have applied to the New York City Landmarks Commission to become historic places. If approved, property owners would have to obtain the city?s permission before making any changes to exteriors in the area.

However, locations on the National Register of Historic Places are under less scrutiny. Currently, a developer wants to tear down a home in South Clinton Hill, which is on the list. According to officials, he can proceed because federal law does not force owners to preserve the property.
