Starrett City tenants' struggle to maintain their affordable housing continued Wednesday at a rally outside City Hall.
Tenants, elected officials and members of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now are calling for the creation of a panel of tenants to approve all potential bids on Starrett City.
Tenants are demanding bidders maintain Section 8 housing, as well as guarantee services such as security and grounds keeping. They are also looking for a commitment to develop vacant land and keeping it affordable.
"We are calling for a clear, open, transparent process so that bidders can be vetted by the community," said tenant Bertha Lewis.
The housing complex has been on the market for the last year. Supporters of the tenants include City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who says the Starrett City decision will set a precedent for affordable housing in the city.
