General’s Office released footage Friday from a fatal shooting by police
that happened in Englewood early last month.
The video shows
officers responding to a domestic dispute just before 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 3.
According to
prosecutors, Englewood police officers arrived at a home on West Englewood
Avenue after a 911 call “involved a man with a knife who was reportedly
stabbing and trying to kill individuals inside the residence.”
The man with the knife
was later identified as Bernard Placide, 22, of Englewood.
From the attorney
general’s office:
“Upon arrival,
officers located one of the three stabbing victims in a bathroom. Officers
subsequently located Mr. Placide in a bedroom armed with a knife. Officers
issued multiple commands for him to drop the weapon. When Mr. Placide failed to
comply, Officer Brian Havlicek deployed a taser. Officer Luana Sharpe
discharged her firearm, fatally wounding Mr. Placide. Police and emergency
medical personnel rendered first aid. Officer Sharpe was also treated for
an injury to her hand from the knife.”
Investigators say they
recovered a knife near Placide, who was transported to Englewood Hospital and
later pronounced dead. The three injured individuals were treated and released
from a hospital.
Details surrounding a
motive for the knife attack have not been released.
