Construction on the Verrazano Bridge isn't just causing headaches for commuters.
Stores in the area say the increased traffic accompanying the work has been detrimental to business. Storeowners say traffic often slows to a standstill and cuts off customers from the shops.
"You've got businesses here 40, 50 years ? some of them are ready to close," says Duke Johnson of Panda Ski and Sports Store. The athletic store's entrance is located two blocks from the bridge's entrance.
State Senator Marty Golden is demanding the MTA find a solution to the traffic problem. Golden is fearful the construction could cause stores in the area to go out of business.
"You move traffic, people can shop," says Golden. "If you can't get to the store, you're not coming."
