WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
The News 12 Storm Watch Team continues to track this Nor'easter for our Sunday and into Monday. This forecast remains on track. Scattered showers, wind, and waves begin to pick up Saturday night. This continues to intensify into the peak of the event, which looks to be Sunday night into Monday morning. Main concerns right now are strong to damaging gusts between 30 to 50 mph, more along the coast and even stronger on the water. Heavy, potentially torrential downpours will bring between 1.5 inches and 3 inches of rain to fall between Sunday night and Monday morning, and major coastal impacts including moderate to major coastal flooding and erosion of beaches.
High tides times for the Bronx (Throgs Neck) on Sunday are around 4 a.m. and 4 p.m., and around 5:20 a.m. and 5:40 p.m. Monday. For Brooklyn (Coney Island) high tide times will be around 12:40 a.m. and 12:20 p.m. on Sunday and 1:20 a.m. and 1:40 p.m. on Monday. Tides are already higher than usual due to the recent full moon and the distance of the moon right now, but wind and pressure from this storm will worsen these. Communities along the water should be prepared for widespread coastal flooding.
There is a low-medium risk of flash flooding from the rain. Blocked storm drains from fallen leaves could lead to flooding in neighborhoods. Areas that tend to flood during even a slight rain should be on high alert through the beginning of next week.
One of the concerns of this storm is that it is a continuous and repeated battering of rain, wind, and coastal concerns throughout all day Sunday and into Monday. This will be problematic for trees and power lines and could potentially lead to downed trees and downed limbs that could cause power outages.
The weather for Saturday is mostly OK, with wind and waves building during the later portions of the day. There could be a stray shower, but it will be a good final day to prepare for this storm. Make a plan for what to do if your neighborhood floods, have devices and extra power banks charged up and ready to go if you lose power, and secure your outdoor furniture and decorations for the storm. If you haven't put any decorations up, wait until next week. If you do have any up, make sure it's secured or bring it inside for this storm. Keep checking back in with the News 12 Storm Watch Team, who will be with you every step of the way during this storm.
