A street in Coney Island has been renamed in honor of a man who inspired generations of musicians and social justice activists across the country.
The corner of Mermaid Avenue and West 35th Street officially became Woody Guthrie Way Saturday.
In honor of the street renaming, the whole Guthrie family gathered in Coney Island to celebrate. Guthrie's children, Nora and Arlo Guthrie, grew up there.
"It is just really nice that our father is being recognized because for many years, he had a hard time being recognized because blacklisting and things like that. So it is kind of cool that now, finally, you feel like the right thing is being done," says Nora Guthrie.
