City school officials announced Friday a plan to add double Dutch as an official sport in the city?s physical education curriculum. Many Brooklyn students are jumping for joy over the addition of the sport, which was first introduced to New York by the Dutch settlers. Coaches say this aerobic activity has a lot of components that make it physically challenging.?It?s great cross training, if you?re a basketball player, football player, track runner? this double Dutch is great for all sports,? says coach Sandy Fortune. The last sport added to the school district was cricket last year, with over a dozen teams competing in the spring 2008 season. This year?s double Dutch jumpers are confident their sport will be just as successful. The New York City Department of Education is the first in the country to recognize double Dutch as an official sport.
