A city survey says Brooklyn has the city's highest child death rate, but the city as a whole bested the national average.
The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene released its first report on the issue Tuesday. The study found 286 children between the ages of 1 and 12 died from injuries between 2001 and 2005. The city found many of those deaths were attributed to car accidents.
The report went on to say most of the accidents occurred near schools. Officials suggest more crosswalks and speed bumps are needed to keep children safe.
According to the study, New York City's child death rate is still lower than the national average.
