More than half of Americans are dealing with "central obesity," which is an accumulation of fat around their mid-sections, according to a new study.
About 54 percent of Americans are fighting belly bulge, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. And many doctors say a lack of a six-pack is the least of their concerns because belly fat can lead to bigger health problems.
"Not only diabetes, but high blood pressure, sleep disorders--this is really important," says Dr. Guido Macchiavello. "Complications with digestion. Reflux disease."
According to Macchiavello, even having a "normal" body mass index in addition to a larger waist can spell trouble.
Doctors say there is no short cut and that exercise and eating a healthy, balanced diet are key to reducing waistlines.
