A new study from the Atlantic Yards Arena developer and government agencies finds the project could become a disaster in downtown Brooklyn.
Bruce Ratner, who also owns the Nets, is working to build an arena, retail and housing development in downtown Brooklyn. However, a joint study shows construction costs would be more than $1 billion over budget and the arena will lead to traffic and subway tie-ups when completed. Still, Ratner and others feel the Atlantic Yards Arena is needed to revitalize the area where Flatbush and Atlantic avenues meet.
Critics argue the arena and surrounding structures will lack the infrastructure to support the expected population increase.
