A Suffolk County police K-9 lunged at a man and bit him during the funeral of slain NYPD Detective Didarul Islam in the Bronx.
It happened in an instant - and was captured on camera.
The K-9 is seen getting out of a police vehicle and running toward several people, before biting one man from behind.
The police were outside the funeral of slain NYPD Detective Didarul Islam on White Plains Road in the Bronx when the dog got loose.
The Suffolk County Police Department released the following statement to News 12:
“During yesterday’s funeral in the Bronx, the door to a police vehicle became ajar and the canine inside escaped, biting someone. The dog’s handler recalled the dog and gained custody. The department is reviewing the incident.”
News 12 spoke to an eyewitness, who did not want her name used.
She said she was walking her newborn son when the dog got loose.
The woman said she was scared for herself, her son, her husband and the man who was bitten.
Witnesses told News 12 there was a minor accident between two police cars prior to the dog getting loose.
Brett Lawrence is a K-9 handler and trainer. He did not train this dog but reviewed the video.
He told News 12 that the reason the K-9 may have bitten the victim is because the man was wearing loose clothing akin to the training jackets normally worn by trainers.
