A hospital in Sunset Park is changing the game for recovering patients.
NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn allows patients to improve both their physical and mental strength through video games.
“We want to try to maximize the benefit that our patients get while they're here,” says NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn Vice President Vincent Cavallaro.
Cavallaro says the video games have actually improved patients' brain function by making physical therapy more interactive, fun and engaging.
The video games are not always easy. One of the games used places patients in the point of view of the game avatar, forcing them to use their balance to move the avatar forward.
Patient Joe Beri say he has been exercising his cognitive skills and balance after not being able to get out of bed just a few days ago.
“It hurts all over but it's a good sign, I'm seeing day by day small achievements,” says Beri.
