A fire that began on the first floor of a residential building in Sunset Park displaced several families Saturday, according to the FDNY.
Firefighters responded to 7th Avenue and 54th street after flames spread from a clothing donation bin positioned in front of the property. The fire moved quickly through multiple floors.
Nearby businesses were temporarily evacuated as crews worked to bring the fire under control.
No injuries were reported.
Fire officials on the scene told News 12 the fire started from the top of the orange clothes donation bins. Residents say it is there where a homeless man has been camping out and harassing people for months.
They said they have repeatedly reported concerns about the situation and that the man had recently begun sleeping on top of the bins.
Several tenants told News 12 they confronted him earlier in the day and believe he may have been involved in starting the fire.
Witnesses said they saw him running down the street shortly after the flames broke out.
"This homeless guy has been hanging out there for a year. Police or people move him. He always comes back and now he has started sleeping on top of the donation bins. No one is doing anything about it," said Nita Tran, who's family lives in the building.
Residents said they have filed multiple 311 complaints about the situation, including one that was marked closed Saturday morning. They say the man was not removed despite that complaint being closed, and the fire began just a few hours later.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Social Services, identified as the agency that responded in that 311 complaint but had not heard back as of Saturday night.
The Red Cross said its crews were on the scene working to assist displaced residents.
