Sunset Park residents are showing their support for a 17-year-old girl who was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer.
Cindy Daza was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer. Supporters say Daza was trying to protect her brother Jonathan, who is allegedly the man seen on video getting kicked by the police officer on Sunday.
NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton called the video "concerning," explaining the officers were trying to clear the area at the end of a street fair. The officer in the video has since been suspended, but Daza's supporters say that isn't enough.
"I think what's really clear here is that the police department lacks respect for the community," says Daza's attorney Rebecca Heinegg.
Sunset Park residents say the same officer can be seen in another video from back in June, using brutal force on more civilians. Community members say they have brought the video to local lawmakers, hoping they can get some answers from the NYPD. The NYPD says it cannot comment on the alleged incident because it has not received any information on it.
