A group of Sunset Park neighbors says Fourth Avenue is dangerous and needs a bicycle lane, but city officials say there's no room.
The Sunset Parker Facebook group, which has more than 7,000 members, says it conducted its own study last year and found that around 40 bicyclists use the road every hour.
The study, which ran for seven days last year, included data from different intersections between 65th Street and 17th Street.
The group says the high bicycle traffic warrants a protected lane and has called on the city's Department of Transportation to do an official study on the possibility of installing one.
The DOT says it's already reviewed the possibility of a bike lane on Fourth Avenue and cannot install one. Officials say they cannot narrow the center median to make room because of how the subway runs beneath it.
