New York residents will get a reprieve beginning today on the four percent sales tax for clothing and footwear if they buy items costing less than $110.
A sales tax exemption had originally been put in place a few years back, but the state lifted it in October 2010 to raise revenue for the faltering economy.
The tax exemption is part of the state's $132.5 billion budget, which was negotiated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Senate Republican and Assembly Democratic majorities. It increases spending by 1.9 percent and addresses a nearly $2 billion deficit.
