Taxidermist transforms dead animals into human-like poses
A Brooklyn taxidermist specializes on transforming animals into human-like characters.
"Anthropomorphic means giving animals human characteristics, putting them in poses or activities that are human," says Amber Maykut.
Maykut has owned Brooklyn Taxidermy in Greenpoint for the past two years, and spends several hours repairing and creating animal statues for her clients.
She says the bread and butter of her business is mice and butterflies, especially for the holidays when people like to create their own animal/human-like characters.
"I get tons of orders where people want to dress a mouse as a rock star or like their spouse," Maykut says.
Maykut  has also learned how to be her own carpenter in order to complete a perfect piece. She says she's never hunted, but says she does hunt down butchers and buys animals skins to create her pieces. When it comes to her mice, she buys them already frozen.
