Police arrested a teen blocks away from where he allegedly shot a man during a Fourth of July barbecue.
The 63-year-old victim was shot in the back at Sumner Playground near William Floyd Elementary School on Throop Avenue at around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
According to police, Tyrone Whidbee, 15, of Williamsburg, entered the park on a bicycle, shot at a group of people barbecuing and then ran off.
Officers in the 79th Precinct searched the area, and a teen fitting the description of the suspect was found nearby. Whidbee was clutching his waistband heading down Humbolt Street.
One officer followed Whidbee on foot, while his partner followed in a police vehicle.
Police say a semiautomatic weapon that they observed Whidbee toss was recovered, and that a witness identified Whidbee as the shooter.
Whidbee faces charges of attempted murder and assault.
The victim was taken to Kings County Hospital and is expected to be OK.
