The teen who was bitten by a shark in the waters off Fire Island shared the details of his encounter today.
Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers responded Wednesday to calls of a shark bite at around 5:45 p.m.
They say Max Haynes, of Islip, suffered a minor bite on his foot and was able to walk out of the water.
"But then just out of nowhere - this thing just like latched onto my foot," Haynes said. "And I held on for a few seconds and it was just crazy."
Haynes is the fifth person bitten by a shark this summer on Long Island.
Suffolk and Nassau officials have been patrolling to ensure that the waters are safe.
Haynes says he will be back in the water "as soon as possible."
