A 14‑year‑old boy was killed, and an 18‑year‑old man was critically injured Friday evening in a subway surfing incident on the Williamsburg Bridge.

Police responded to a 911 call at 5:58 p.m. near Lewis and Delancey streets on the Lower East Side where they found the 14‑year‑old unconscious and unresponsive.

They say the injuries were consistent with a fall from an elevated position. The 18‑year‑old was discovered unconscious on the roadbed nearby.

Both were taken to the hospital where the 14‑year‑old was pronounced dead. The 18‑year‑old was in critical condition as of Saturday night.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted about the incident on X, calling it a "preventable tragedy."

No arrests had been made as of Saturday night.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification.

NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow released the following statement:

“This is heartbreaking and knowing that riding outside trains is going to end tragically, it’s incomprehensible -— and pains me as a parent —- that it continues to happen. I’m imploring families, friends, teachers, and others coming into contact with teens engaging in these suicidal stunts to get them to stop.”
