Tenants at East New York's Spring Creek, formerly known as Starrett City, complex are demanding a long-term plan to keep their housing affordable.

The housing organization ACORN joined renters Wednesday to put pressure on the owner to communicate with residents. ACORN members were camped out in front of the owner's Manhattan office.

Gov. Eliot Spitzer has also called on the owner to come up with a plan to keep the complex affordable.

The push comes after the government rejected a $1.3 billion bid from Clipper Equities to takeover the sprawling 6,000-unit government-subsidized complex. Officials cited fears that the company would raise rents, forcing out low- and moderate-income New Yorkers.

Clipper's bid is set to expire in 10 days. Housing advocates say they want to make sure Spring Creek doesn't end up on the market again.
