Some tenants of Rutland Plaza apartments in East Flatbush are now suing to block rent hikes of up to $1,000 a month.
Tenants gathered on the steps of Brooklyn Borough Hall Thursday to protest rent hikes and poor living conditions.
Tenants said they are being forced to live in inhumane conditions, despite their landlord getting government financing for repairs nearly a decade ago.
As News 12 previously reported, tenants said they are subjected to appalling conditions inside Rutland Plaza, which includes mold, rats and raw sewage in the parking lot and seeping into homes through their bathtubs, sinks and toilets.
Residents also shared concerns for safety as many doors remain unlocked through the complex, a teen was shot and killed in one of the lobbies after coming home from school in January.
They said Amistad Management Corporation has done little to nothing to make repairs are address their concerns.
They've now organized and have filed a lawsuit against the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR) to block the rent hike.
DHCR said it does not comment on pending litigation.
The Amistad Management Corporation declined to comment.
