The cost of cleaning up a winter mess can add up.
As we are in the season for snow, are you prepared with the salt and shovels? News 12 called around to local hardware stores and found a lot of them are out of the salt mix that you spread on the sidewalk.
Checking the big box stores, a 50-pound bag of ice melt runs around $12. You can get deals if you buy bags in bulk.
You can also get shovels in bulk. Home Depot features six for $170, that comes out to $28.33 a shovel.
There is also a way to make some money off the mess too. The New York City Department of Sanitation hires temporary emergency snow shovelers. The job pays $18.54 an hour, and after you work 40 hours in a week, the pay goes up to $27.81 an hour. If you are interested in applying click here.
