The Real Deal: Tips for shopping for fish

We are all trying to eat less meat and more fish these days as part of a healthy diet.
But what’s the Real Deal on what kind of fish we should stay away from?
News 12's consumer reporter Janice Lieberman finds out what fish should be on our shopping lists.
According to Victoria Seaver, of EatingWell.com, the top fish to shop for includes Atlantic mackerel, Atlantic wild caught salmon, Pacific caught wild sardines, rainbow trout as well as some lake trout.
What should be limited?
"Larger fish that lived for a longer time, and also maybe tend to eat smaller fish, have higher levels of mercury in their system. So, that might be things like marlin and shark," says Seaver.
Quality seafood can be pricey. Seaver says not to shy away from frozen, as most fish when caught out at sea, is frozen right there to preserve freshness.
Seaver also recommends buying individually frozen packets of fish - so there's no waste.
Just because fish is on sale, doesn't necessarily mean that it's going bad - so take advantage of the sales.
There's a definite - If it smells, leave it behind.
Canned fish is a great option as well, salmon, sardines, and mackerel. It can be a cheaper and handier way to add good protein to your diet.
