The ‘Loot’ comic book shop in Carroll Gardens has a secret superpower - making it easier for kids to get their hands on comics and inspiring them to create vast, unique worlds of their own.

Marisol Reed, one of the managers at Loot, says the company has a rewards system that makes buying and borrowing comics easier for neighborhood kids.

“We incentivize reading comics. So if you read 10 comics a month and review them, they'll get store credit toward memberships or towards buying comics,” says Reed.

The store is geared toward local children.

"We are comic buffs,” says Reed. “We really miss the fact that you could at one time could go down the street, go to the bodega and buy the latest comic. Even if you're a kid, it doesn't cost a lot of money"

Loot will also be holding classes in the fall for children and teens, allowing them to create their own comics and sell them in the store. For shop managers, it’s an opportunity for kids to take a break from watching fantasy worlds on a screen and to start creating them on blank pages.

“We want to bring kids back to the idea that you look each other in the eye,” says Reed. “You talk about things. You develop it. You don't just stand behind a screen your whole life."
