Many business owners and residents are pleased with the city?s plans to expand the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Developers say when construction is finished, the Navy Yard will include more than 4-million square feet of industrial space and a neighborhood supermarket. More than 5,000 permanent new jobs and between 500 to 1,000 temporary positions will also be available.
Mayor Bloomberg (R-NY) says the city will provide more than $200 million for infrastructure costs. The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation oversees the city-owned property. Corporation officials say six new buildings will be constructed in the first phase of the expansion. The city says it should take approximately three years to complete.
