Three men are facing hate crime charges in the assault and robbery of a gay man on the Belt Parkway.

According to investigators, four young men met 28-year-old Michael Sandy on the Internet and promised him sexual favors. Police say one of the four men questioned by police had met Sandy on a street corner and convinced him to drive to an isolated parking lot where the group was waiting. The confrontation spilled onto the six-lane roadway and Sandy was hit by a vehicle.

Gary Timmins, 16, John Fox, 19, and Ilya Shurov, 20, face charges of robbery in the first and second degrees and assault in the first degree, all as hate crimes. The men indicated to police they had in the past used the Internet to lure and attack gay men. Meanwhile, Sandy remains in critical condition at the hospital.
