The Throgs Neck community is up in arms over a new proposal to develop four sites along Bruckner Boulevard and rezone the area.
The proposal calls for four buildings: one residential and three mixed-use residential and commercial. They would range from three to eight stories and would add more than 300 additional housing units to the area.
George Havranek started the Change.org petition less than a week ago and has already gained nearly 2,000 signatures opposing the new proposal to rezone and develop four sites along Bruckner Boulevard.
Former District Manager for Community Board 10 James Vacca says he fought hard to create a low-density community back in 2004--getting the area down-zoned to limit future development and maintain quality of life.
"Then you impact the fire department, the police department, the schools, the infrastructure and that doesn’t make for a healthy community,” said President of the Waterbury Lasalle Community Association Mary Jane Musano.
She also says that the proposed developments would replace the Foodtown at the corner of Crosby Avenue and Bruckner Boulevard, leaving the neighborhood in a food desert.
The Housing and Zoning Committee meeting for Community Board 10 will be held in October. There will be a presentation on the proposal.
News 12 reached out to Joseph Bivona of Throggs Neck Associates, who submitted the rezoning proposal and has not heard back yet.
