The iconic MetroCard, used for 30 years, will no longer be sold after 2025, with commuters urged to switch to new tap-and-go systems, MTA officials said.
MetroCards are currently accepted on PATH trains, MTA subways, and buses, but will be replaced by OMNY (One Metro New York), which uses contactless bank cards, smart devices, or physical OMNY cards, officials said.
PATH stations, however, do not accept OMNY, instead using the Total Access PATH Payment (TAPP) system, already installed at all PATH stations.
“I use my SmartLink card, but TAPP makes it easier, no need to reload at machines,” said Hoboken Councilperson Emily Jabbour. Andrew Wilson, Executive Director of Bike Hoboken, called the separate systems a “missed opportunity” for integration.
Physical TAPP cards are planned, and MetroCards will be accepted into 2026, with a final date to be announced.
New Jersey Transit is testing its FarePay tap-and-go system at four North Jersey bus park-and-rides and Newark light rail.
