The power has been restored to thousands of people after a transformer fire knocked out electricity Monday morning in Ocean County.

Jersey Central Power & Light says that at least 6,000 customers were without power for a time in Lakewood and Toms River.

Officials say that the outage was caused by a substation fire that also caused a brush fire nearby.

Toms River Mayor Mo Hill said he was concerned for his residents since temperatures were in the upper-80s and low-90s for most of Monday.

Water and ice were provided for the impacted residents.
