Residents at 393 Dumont Ave. in Brownsville say for months, they have been asking NYCHA to remove a pile of trash and waste that residents had been throwing out of their windows onto a scaffolding below. The trash sat right next to the windows of resident Rosalyn Jackson.
After News 12 reached out to NYCHA on that status of the cleanup, workers were sent out that day, and cleared the space of all the trash, allowing Rosalyn to finally open her windows and take a breath of fresh air.
"The smell was so bad before, we closed the window," she said adding that now "it smells so fresh, it's good for you the fresh air, it helps you relax," she said.
However, she fears that the trash may soon return, as she has been helpless to stop residents from tossing the waste from their windows.
"How are you going to live in the building, and be destroying it, why not help the place where you live," said her son Jackson Roy.
NYCHA tells News 12 they will increase regular enforcement of cleanup at the site, and have the ability to issue warnings and citations for units found to be damaging the unit or expelling trash outside of the windows.
Three or more violations during a three-month window could lead to an eviction.
