After nearly 120 years, the Tremont branch of the New York Public Library is now officially a landmark in New York City.
The library at 1866 Washington Ave. is the latest addition to the preservation list after the City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to protect its history, culture and knowledge.
News 12 was told that the branch is one of 67 libraries in New York City’s system to be funded by Andrew Carnegie.
Historians have called it a cornerstone of the community as it established one of the first girls' readings clubs in the system, taught English to immigrants and helped bring bilingual staff, programming, and books to the community in 1967 as part of the South Bronx Library Project.
